The Prince of Darkness, Peter Mandelson, is back in the headlines this week with his friend Russian oligarch (somewhat poorer at the moment) Oleg Deripaska, looking for a loan for his UK vehicle company; plus murmurs today about Mandelson’s associations with a company which promoted the controversial Heathrow third runway. This latter has been deemed the worst Government decision since Iraq.
There was always going to be trouble brewing between Mandelson and Gordon Brown, more when than if. Transitting Uranus squares their composite Mars from March 2nd (this Monday) for a few weeks which will bring aggravated jolts and a few insecure moments as well as bad temper. [That returns along with tr Saturn after mid year, with impatience heightening in Nov/Dec 09]. Mandelson’s composite chart with the GB Government is under a damp cloud with tr Saturn conjunct Jupiter exactly now; and tr Uranus then squares the composite Neptune from March 2nd throwing up major worries; followed by tr Uranus elbowing the composite Uranus come late April, and again mid Aug 09. So it’s going to be a rock n roll year for the pair of them, especially since GBrown has tr Uranus conjunct his 12th house Mars from March 2nd as he sails across to Washington to strut his stuff with President Obama. The GBrown Government chart is also in a seesaw thro’ March with tr Saturn opposing Uranus. Poor GB he isn’t having his troubles to seek at the moment with the banking imbroglio/FredShred’s obscene pension all coming back to roost on his shoulders. And probably another of his Finance Ministers about to bite the bullet over it all.

The UK media are having a field day with the return of the Prince of Darkness, Peter Mandelson. The Daily Mail, not natural Labour supporters, have two columnists describing him as – ‘malignant, malevolent, a cancer on British life’ and – ‘ a bully who butchers like a thug and schemes like a shrew’.
Mandelson has clearly had a tough time in his recent EU stint after his last forced resignation with his Solar Arc Saturn squaring Mars. His Solar Arc Sun is exactly square his Mars this year, which is volatile and angry, perhaps what sparked off a major row with Nicholas Sarkozy, the French premier and current President of the EU. This SA Sun continues to square his natal Mars for the next eight months so it’s not going to be a quiet return to UK politics. Later this year Nov/Dec looks very stressed and wobbly for the Gordon Brown Government chart and Mandelson.
With 2009 being even more so. 22/23 degrees mutable shows up in Gordon Brown’s chart (Mars in Pisces, Venus/Mars midpoint) as well as in Mandelson’s (Mars in Virgo squ Jupiter) and in the Brown/Mandelson composite (Mars 22 Sag). So into next spring when transitting Uranus hits 22/23 Pisces again it will really spark off problems and major heated arguments between them.
Still at least it has wakened up what was a very dull Government sliding gently into lethargy, despair and oblivion. It’s also interesting that the financial meltdown has pushed Brown up in the polls just as the Conservative Opposition chart is about to lose its lucky Pluto sextile Jupiter so the Tories’ honeymoon period on the back of Brown’s unpopularity is over.

The big surprise of Gordon Brown’s reshuffle is the welcome back for Peter Mandelson, the EU Commissioner for Trade. The architect of New Labour and a Tony Blair crony who was forced to resigned twice from Blair’s Government he was always reputed to be a Brown enemy. And indeed they do have a fairly tense interface in their composite chart. An argumentative Sun Mars conjunction, only slightly sweetened by Venus, is in a controlling trine to Pluto. They will instinctively both fight for the upper hand. The Sun Mars and Pluto both sextile onto Saturn Neptune so although they share a common vision there is also doubt and suspicion about each other’s motives. Their relationship will be strained right from square one since Pluto is conjunct the composite Venus exactly now which brings intensity of feeling and once the euphoria of the welcome back wears off, jealousy could start to rear its head. Pluto is then conjunct the Sun come November which will bring a few challenges and strains between them. From Marc 2009 tr Uranus squares the composite Mars on and off through 09 which will bring sharp words and insecurity, quite an upheaval.
Mandelson’s own chart – similar in key ways to Vladimir Putin’s with a Sun Saturn Neptune conjunction in Libra – is very pressured through this November with Pluto sextile his Saturn, perhaps making him wonder whether his move had been such a good idea. Then it gets much edgier into 2009. Tr Uranus opposes his Mars from March onwards which will be thoroughly bad tempered and a hint that he may not last in Cabinet till the end of the year. Neptune trines his Jupiter in 2009 bringing down high hopes. Later in 09 Saturn conjuncts his Mars which will be a setback. But he’s lucky and will no doubt land on his feet as per usual. With tr Uranus square his Jupiter through 09 he’ll get a lucky break which offers a way out.
