Yves St Laurent From: Marjorie. (02 Jun 2008 14:06): Yves St Laurent, renowned as the greatest fashion designer of the 20th Century has a complex and fascinating chart. He was a precocious child, designing very young for his mother, winning a Vogue competition at 17 and by 21 he was chief designer for the House of Dior. Three years later Dior was dead and he took his place, revolutionising women''s fashion, giving them power in strikingly modern often controversial designs. He continued through a long career, troubled by drug addictions and depression, early on hounded for his homosexuality, moving couture into accessibility in the High Street.
Two things are instantly striking about his chart. One is the Capricorn Moon opposition Mars Pluto in Cancer which suggests a terrifying, over powering mother, rather counter-intuitive for a man who spent his life waxing eloquent about dressing women''s bodies in style to empower them. This truly difficult emotional aspect no doubt explains a great deal of his tortured emotional life, his tantrums and tendency to micro-manage everyone around him. Moon Pluto would make him controlling and possessive; Moon Mars especially with Pluto made his anger difficult to handle since he would ruthlessly suppress it until it volcanically overflowed.
The other major configuration is the highly creative Saturn opposition Neptune squaring onto a lucky and talented 10th house Jupiter in Sagittarius. Sat Nep is prone to bouts of Dionysian madness and can be paranoid but it is also very artistic. Jupiter provided the strokes of good luck which landed him in the right place at the right time and earned him growing appreciation through his life for his talents.
He was lucky early in life to find a partner who became his business brain and though they separated emotionally as a couple after 20 years when Berge had become exhausted with the difficulties of living with him, they remained together as a working unit. St Laurent has Neptune in the 7th so would be a perfectionist in close relationships, though also evasive and not always responsible.
His chart has an extraordinary five planets in the 6th house of work and health, including his flamboyant Leo Sun, Venus and Mercury, as well as Mars Pluto in Cancer. He would be very hard working which adds a Virgoan touch to the colourful Leonine energy. But he was also bound to be troubled by his health especially with Mars Pluto there. At times he admitted to a 150 cigarettes a day habit, plus a recreational and prescription drug habit. In many ways it''s a miracle he survived to 71.
His Sun squares Uranus giving him the rebellious touch which allowed him to break the mould of women''s fashion, freeing them to dress elegantly in pant suits and safari jackets. But he could be erratic and contradictory in his approach and attitudes.
Of the other great designers of the 20th Century Coco Chanel was also a Sun Venus in Leo - Leo is colourful, a performer and entertainer, craving an audience. Though Cancer with its creativity, orientation towards the feminine and knack for intuitively knowing what the public wants is the sign most associated with fashion design and of St Laurent, Chanel, Dior and Armani all have key planets in Cancer. Chanel has Jupiter in Cancer on the point of a mini grand trine to Uranus and Neptune. Dior had a highly aspected Cancer Moon (opp Sun square Jupiter); and Armani had a New Moon, Mercury and Pluto in Cancer square Jupiter.
All four of these have strongly aspected Jupiters. St Laurent and Dior have Jupiter on the point of a T square; Chanel''s on the point of a mini grand trine and Armani square his key planets.
The other similarity are Uranus Neptune aspects. St Laurent and Armani have Uranus Neptune trines; Chanel also a trine tied into a Jupiter sextile; and Dior had a Neptune Uranus opposition which was sextile/trine the Moon''s NNode and Mars. Historically Uranus Neptune conjunctions have been associated with high periods in Art and Golden Ages in rulership which kind of fits. It is also inspirational.
