In the News / Celebrity Astrology Alexander Solzhenitsyn 11 December 1918 11.15 am Kislovodsk
He was a Sun, Venus in Sagittarius, a sign renowned for its philosophical outlook and optimism, both of which undoubtedly helped in his long years of imprisonment in the gulag and in exile thereafter. He was born only six months after Nelson Mandela so shared his confident, determined, patriotic Jupiter Pluto conjunction in Cancer. His chart at first glance is hardly that eye catching with most aspects being wide. Jupiter is in a wide opposition to Mars in Capricorn giving a hint of impulsiveness, and a tendency to crusade for his beliefs; the Sun is in a very wide trine to Saturn and wide trine to Neptune so he was keen on a better society, and both creative and sensible. What is obvious if the suggested birth time is about accurate is Uranus on the ascendant opposition Saturn in Leo in the 7th. [Though to be frank I''d doubt this birth time since it would give him a 10th house Sun and a flamboyant Jupiter Pluto in the 5th which hardly reflects the reclusive personality he was.] In any event his Saturn Uranus opposition is marked and was very emphasised through the major events of his life. It tends to reflect an unstable life and an autocratic, rather domineering personality though it also gives perseverance, endurance and will power. He had five retrograde planets in his chart, Saturn being on the station to go retrograde. He shared with Nelson Mandela also aspects from his Sun to Saturn/Pluto (= a life of hardship and isolation) and Jupiter/Pluto (= the confidence to persevere and some luck). On his Solar Arc Directions: In 1945 his SA Uranus was conjunct his Moon (= emotional upsets, separation from home) when he was arrested by Stalinist forces and sentenced to 7 years in labour camps. And his SA Jupiter Pluto was hovering round a conjunction to his natal Neptune (= confusion, panic). In 1953/54, still in political exile, he nearly died of stomach cancer as his SA Mars was in opposition to Saturn (= setback, accident prone, suffering). In 1962 when his first book was published his SA Jupiter was conjunct his natal Saturn (= expands what has been restricted). In 1970 he received the Nobel Prize which he didn''t accept for fear of not being allowed back home as his SA Pluto was conjunct his natal Saturn (= great pressure, held back) and his SA Jupiter sextile Pluto (= success). In 1974 he was exiled from the USSR as his SA Saturn was trine Uranus (= positive shift though he never really settled in exile in the USA). The Soviet Union collapsed in 1990 giving him permission to return as his SA Pluto squared his natal Sun (= profound life changes; though he didn''t return for another four years by which time his SA Pluto was square his Venus (= intense feelings) and his SA Pluto was opposition his Moon (= highly emotional). If anything his Solar Arc Directions are the most accurate for his life''s events with his Tertiary Progressions coming next. Though it''s worth watching that seemingly positive progressions can also accompany difficult experiences. When he was sentenced in 1945 to life in the gulag which could have killed him, he had Secondary Progressed Moon trine Jupiter, and SP Mercury conjunct Venus; and Tertiary Progressed Jupiter trine his Sun(= all basically upbeat) Though his Tertiary Progressed Uranus had come direct to the opposition to his natal Saturn which indicated jolting changes and that added to his very powerful and difficult Solar Arc aspects obviously over-rode the more upbeat ones. So it does require seeing all the aspects and not isolating the nice ones and thinking it''s good news. His transits also in 1945 have Saturn conjunct his Jupiter which certainly damps enthusiasm; and Pluto square Neptune which is devastating and worrying. The transits to his major life events like the SA Directions seem to home in on the Saturn Uranus opposition. 1962, first book, tr Uranus conjunct Saturn (= change, move forward); 1970 Nobel Prize tr Neptune square Saturn (= worry, confusion); 1974, exile to USA, tr Jupiter conjunct Uranus (ascendant?) opposition Saturn + lucky break, though ambivalence also).
