An emotionally private, home-loving Pisces hardly sounds an apt description of the world’s most powerful global media executive and owner. But with a fourth house Sun, Rupert Murdoch is proud of his family lineage and was close to his father who died when he was at University, who sent him on his way into the media business. Family connections are important to him though with an emphasised Uranus also in the 4th he rarely sits still and can be quite a disruptive force at home and within the family. Other 4th house Suns are Prince Charles and David Bowie so it is by no means the reclusive, stay-at-home temperament that it sometimes is made to sound like.
Murdoch’s driving force comes from a tough-minded Cardinal T square of Saturn in Capricorn opposition Mars, Pluto and Jupiter in Cancer squaring onto Uranus and his Moon’s North Node in Aries. The early 1930s produced determined personalities, many of whom have overcome major obstacles to make their name. Saturn opposing Pluto has grit, perseverance and a gloomy streak along with great resistance to change. A Cardinal Uranus on the point of a T square points to an innovator, a rebel, one who forces through dramatic changes, who is also a law-unto-himself and a highly stimulated, overly energetic personality. It gives him aggressiveness, defiance, a disinclination to worry about the reaction of others either at a personal or a public level. So he has the capacity to bring about great changes in society, especially since his focal Uranus falls within a degree of his Moon’s North Node suggesting he will play a divisive role in leading the zeitgeist in directions he wishes. When used as a force for good this T square can bring about much needed social reforms, breaking down old patterns. Mikhail Gorbachev, the reformist Russian leader, who brought about the end of the Cold War and oversaw the collapse of the Communist Party in the Soviet Union.
Murdoch’s Jupiter Pluto conjunction in Cancer gives him a might-makes-right approach to relationships. He has confidence and the leadership ability to make his views stick. Though with Pluto also conjunct Mars there is a ruthless edge to him which will cut corners if necessary or over ride niceties to get what he wants. He likes the adrenalin rush of high risk activities, sailing close to the wind and pulling off the gamble. His Mars in the 8th also points to an interest in business finances, and a need to control other people’s money. Venus in the 2nd makes him personally extravagant, with a liking for beautiful things.
Pisces is a complex sign, not always the wimpy, vague dreamer which it is often described as. The sign of the two fishes it includes under its umbrella little fishes who do prefer to drift with the currents. But the other type of Pisces is definitely big fish – shark or whale. They are the visonaries who live out their dreams in daylight and make them happen. Many explorers are Pisces as well as mega-business types. Admittedly not very practical, they have the focus to follow their star. Neptune, his Sun’s ruler, close to his Midheaven, is in the 9th house of communication and international matters. But journalism is not his aim. Money is and power.
Emotionally, he is complicated and secretive with a strong 4th house and a 12th house Moon, suggesting he never felt encouraged as a child to be dependent or allow himself to be nurtured. His Mars Pluto opposition Saturn also gives him a cold, unfeeling streak. Added onto a disruptive Uranus in the 4th, he finds settling to a stable family or emotional life exceptionally difficult. Though often 4th house Suns do find the latter section of their lives much more peaceful.
