Steven Spielberg's withdrawal from his position as artistic adviser to the 2008 Beijing Olympics over China's resistance to bring pressure to stop the atrocities in Darfur is a slap in the face for the Chinese. The wonder is he ever took the role in the first place. His Saturn Pluto conjunction falls on China's Mars Pluto conjunction which is hardly a marriage made in heaven. He is ultra determined and they are ruthlessly controlling - it's not a relationship in which compromise is possible. China's Saturn falls in his 3rd house so communications will always be defensive. His Neptune falls on their Sun so they won't pin him down.
The chart for the Beijing Olympics is extremely pressured and risky with a Mars opposition Uranus square Pluto in place when it starts. Pluto at the apex of a mutable T square suggests a highly strung event with hair trigger responses, pushed past the point of endurance with a huge amount of nervous strain almost to mental collapse. Spielberg's Sagittarian Sun falls within two degrees of the focal point Pluto so he's very wise to steer clear though his action will also exacerbate the Chinese Plutonic need to stay in control and therefore raise the levels of nervous tension even higher.
Steven Spielberg's Chart: A hard working Sagittarian with unconventional talents, a flair for breaking the mould, and an unbudgeable determination to follow his own path make the legendary movie producer a force to be reckoned with. His 6th house Sun makes him more practical than most Sagittarians; it gives a realism and attention to detail which is helpful in a chart with only one earth sign. He is self effacing, preferring to do a good job for its own sake rather than worrying overly about ego-boosts. He is hyper-critical, health conscious and with Mars close to his Sun in early Capricorn, quite a perfectionist, prone to irritability if everything is not done to his exacting standard. His Sun opposes rebellious Uranus in the 12th so he’s capable of thinking outside the box, trying out new ideas and pushing back the boundaries in whatever he does. Though it also makes him highly strung, at time prone to irrtational decisions.
A predominantly fire water chart points to a personality that is emotional and inspirational, an artistic entrepreneur. Though with all his water planets being in Scorpio he is also deeply secretive and self protective about his personal life. He’ll never admit when he’s been hurt but will take pride in keeping his feelings well out of sight. He’s got the Moon in sensual Scorpio as well as Jupiter and Venus, so he’s charismatic, a powerful charmer when it suits him. What may put the dampers on that sociable, sexy bunch of planets is the bleak Saturn Pluto conjunction in Leo which squares them. This has always made him feel an outsider, gives him a depressive streak and makes change unusually dificult for him. Usefully he has it positioned in his 2nd house of personal finances so he channels that formidable Saturn Pluto energy, sometimes known as the aspect of the black magician, into making blockbuster movies. He has channeled his fifth house energy into entertainment and children’s movies. With his darker side he has headed for more serious or bleaker movies like Cape Fear, Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan.
Present Influences: In a less drivenly ambitious phase of his life with Saturn moving through his 2nd house until mid 2007 he probably wants to take it easier. He may find money in shorter supply (relatively!) and perhaps success harder to come by. He’ll want to make movies which are truly meaningful for him. With Saturn at its second return, conjunct Saturn and Pluto in 2006 he may feel blocked, stuck and be thinking deeply about what comes next in his life. Saturn also squares his Moon, Jupiter and Venus until mid 2007 so he will be less sociable, perhaps feeling separated at times from loved ones, and definitely tight on cash flow. In 2006 as well Pluto is conjunct his 6th house Sun so there will be considerable pressures on him at work and perhaps health-wise. He’ll need to let go some old securities and certainties and start to rebuild a different kind of lifestyle on the far side after Pluto has crossed Mars in 2008 and 2009 which will be a frustrating, impatient time for him when he faces considerable challenges. In 2008 as well Uranus is conjunct his Midheaven suggesting a major change of direction workwise, perhaps splitting from old partners since he won’t want to fit in as he once did.
